Facts for Renters
- San Gabriel was one of the earliest missions established in California during the Spanish settlement. It was built in 1771 and is one of the best preserved missions in the state. While some parts have been replaced, such as the bell tower, many of the original pieces are still there. These include the original six bells, the handcrafted altar and the baptistery.
- The city is the second oldest settlement in all of California, with only San Diego being older. Before Europeans arrived, the Gabrielino-Tongva Native American tribe lived there. They partnered with the Spanish settlers to build the mission. They helped the community thrive by teaching them how to tan leather, which became a valuable trade item.
- Outside of the metropolitan area, there's the Angeles National Forest, which is home to the San Gabriel Mountains. Condors, mountain lions and spotted owls all live in the mountains. Residents can use the many trails for hiking, biking and other recreational activities.
